Penelitian ini dibatasi hanya dengan melihat pembaruan Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah (MTI) Canduang pada abad ke-20, tepatnya pada tahun 1907-1970 M. Pendekatan dalam penelitian ini adalah sosio-historis dengan menganalisis manuskrip dan dokumen-dokumen sejarah. Penelitian ini termasuk library research. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa lembaga pendidikan Islam tradisional di Minangkabau sama sekali tidak statis, karena mereka selalu kreatif dan secara berangsur-angsur menyesuaikan diri terhadap perubahan lingkungan. Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah Canduang sebagai representasi lembaga pendidikan Islam tradisional di Minangkabau yang mampu merespons modernisasi tanpa menghilangkan seutuhnya tradisi Islam yang sudah mengakar di Minangkabau. Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah Canduang merupakan salah satu surau yang mengalami pembaruan menjadi madrasah sebagai respons terhadap modernisasi pendidikan Islam yang berjalan pada paruh abad ke-20 M.

Abstract. This research proved that the traditional Islamic education institutions in Minangkabau were not at all static, because they were always creative and gradually adjust to environmental changes. Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah Canduang is a representation of traditional Islamic education institutions in Minangkabau that able to respond to modernization without eliminating the whole Islamic tradition that has taken root in Minangkabau. Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah Canduang is one of surau that undergoing a renewal into a madrasah in response to the modernization of Islamic education that ran in the mid of 20th century AD. This research was limited by only observe the renewal of the Madrasah Tarbiyah Islamiyah (MTI) Canduang in the 20th century, precisely in the years 1907-1970 AD. The approach of this study was socio-historical by analyzing manuscripts and historical documents. This research belong to the library research.
