Strengthening Qur’anic Values through Minangkabau Culture in Educational Practices at SMAN 5 Padang

Abstrak

This study investigates the integration of Al-Qur'an education with Minangkabau cultural values in Islamic religious education at SMAN 5 Padang, aiming to develop a model that harmonizes religious instruction with local cultural traditions to strengthen students’ spiritual and cultural competence. Using a qualitative case study design, the research employed in-depth interviews with teachers and students, document analysis of lesson plans, and classroom observations, with data analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings indicate that integrating Qur’anic education with Minangkabau cultural values creates a contextualized learning environment in which religious teachings are meaningfully connected to local cultural wisdom. Teachers adapted the curriculum to incorporate values such as respect for elders, social harmony, ethical conduct, and Islamic principles grounded in the Al-Qur’an, leading to increased student engagement and deeper understanding of both religious and cultural dimensions. However, challenges emerged, including curriculum constraints and the need for further teacher training to effectively implement the model. Despite these limitations, the study concludes that the integration approach significantly enhances students’ religious and cultural identity by aligning religious education with their cultural heritage. The research offers important implications for educators and policymakers regarding the value of embedding local cultural contexts in religious education and recommends further studies to refine and expand this integration model across diverse educational settings.
